Three hares chase in the furrows of a Suffolk field … The image on this card is from Celia’s linocut, ‘Three in one field’ – it was inspired by a tiny fragment of stained glass in the ancient church of Long Melford in Suffolk, which depicts the mysterious ‘three hares’ symbol. The three hares with shared ears are found in designs around the world, in both China and the Middle East as well as village churches in Cornwall.
How did they find their way to Suffolk? Perhaps the hares in the fields around Long Melford know the answer.
